The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was first established in 1881 and continues to function even today. The 2 foot narrow gauge line transports passengers across the breathtakingly beautiful mountainous terrain that stretches between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. The railway line is a marvellous feat of engineering that allows locomotives to traverse between stations whose varying elevations pose a natural challenge that many thought was impossible to surmount. While regular services are catered to by modern diesel powered locomotives, the tourist trains between Darjeeling and Ghum are operated by a Vintage Steam Locomotive. Popularly known as the Darjeeling Toy Train, the railway line attracts tousands of tourists while simultaneously offering a mode of transport that offers a chance to take in the region's splendid natural beauty. The Railway Museum at Ghum station is quite intriguing and offers an insight into the history of the railway line. Together with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
