"Victorian Gothic building with multitude of turrets"
Sligo Courthouse was built in 1878 on the site of an earlier structure. Designed by J. Rawson Carroll, also responsible for Classiebawn Castle in Mullaghmore, it is a fine example of High Victorian Gothic style. In reaction to the symmetry and clarity of form found in Georgian architecture, the style worked towards blurred outlines and complicated groupings of architectural features, clearly seen in the aracaded entrance, multiple turrets, and the extraordinary octagonal tower. The tower stands 110ft above street level with an ornate, pointed roof and elaborate dormers. Although at the opening it was admired for its decorative features, the Courthouse also had revolutionary heating and ventilation systems. No doubt these have helped the building stand the test of time.
