Old Sow Whirlpool is one of the most fascinating terrifying sights of nature, a massive whirlpool churning in the middle of the ocean due to extreme tides on the ocean floor. One of the largest whirlpools in the western hemishphere, it apparently it got its name due to the English word 'Old Sough' or old drain, as it does like a large drain slowly sucking the water down. Due to the tumultuous nature of the currents, it is best to view it from a distance on a large boat and manual boats are strictly prohibited near it.
Established in 1892, Calais Free Library is one of the oldest functional public libraries in the United States. Architect A.H. Vinal, designed the structure in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. This brick building replaced the former home of Abraham Lincoln's aide, James Shepherd Pike. A new building was added to the original one in 1985, to house the Calais Free Library Art Gallery. Overlooking the nautical border between the United States and Canada, McCurdy Smokehouse is an erstwhile factory, which was used for processing herring back in the time.
