Marshall's

Let the soft breezes caress you as you partake of some of the best food on the island. Listen to the tree frogs and the low-key music in the background. Now this is the Caribbean at its best! A pumpkin curry soup or conch chowder to start your meal are perfect choices. The entrees are beautifully presented and range from chicken, veal, or steak to freshly caught fish and pasta dishes. An entree is often enough for two people, for instance the salmon is served in a sauce of fresh tarragon and cream. The owner/chef, Verral Marshall, will come out to greet you and to ensure your dining experience is a pleasure.

Reggae Beach Bar

One of the best spots on the island is the Reggae Beach Bar. The food is some of the best on the island. The conch chowder is served in a large soup plate with bread on the side and is a meal in itself. Conch fritters is another delectable choice; six large fritters are served with a delightful dipping sauce. Also on the menu are great burgers, a flying fish sandwich, barbecued chicken and ribs, steak and salads. Then to top it all off, be tempted by a terrific dessert selection. The blender drinks are a specialty of the house. Try the peanut butter colada. They also have pina colada, strawberry, banana and mango. The bartenders are a joy to watch and will be happy to give you some island history along with your delectable drink. This light, airy establishment is very comfortable. You can come right off the beach and sit at large white tables decorated with local flowers.

Fisherman's Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf is located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea and the views are outstanding from this lovely dining spot. From this vantage point, you can see the coastline of Basseterre all the way out to the southeast peninsula as well as St. Kitts sister island, Nevis. You will find a comfortable setting of alfresco dining on the patios or inside in a dining room. It's a favourite with tourists and locals alike and a great place to take the entire family for dinner. It's so popular that the place is often crowded; if you're planning a quiet, romantic evening, this may not be optimal. The offerings are mostly seafood: Fresh local fish such as mahimahi, grouper, snapper and swordfish are lightly seasoned and grilled to perfection. Grilled lobster and jumbo shrimp are served with drawn butter. Also available are barbecued chicken, ribs and several cuts of steak. After placing your order, tuck into a basket of warm, home-cooked bread and a crisp, garden salad. When your assigned number is called, go up to the grill and get your main course, then make your choice from the many vegetables, potatoes and rice dishes available. The food is basic, but done in a delectable fashion.

Sunset Cafe at Timothy Beach

Located on Frigate Bay at The Timothy Beach Resort, this cafe offers dining overlooking the Caribbean. It was totally refurbished in 1998. This open-air cafe is decorated with murals of sea life and tropical flowers. The bar is comfortable with patio dining as well as in the main dining room. The kitchen area is open so you may watch the chef prepare your meal. The menu offers a variety of West Indian and Continental cuisine. Breakfast is served from 8-11am, lunch from noon-5pm and dinner from 6pm-closing. Breakfast offers egg dishes, French toast, pancakes and fresh fruit. Lunch items include sandwiches, burgers, salads and a daily special. Dinners offer a variety of chicken, beef kabobs, beef tips, fresh fish and pasta dishes. A full service bar is available as well as a limited wine list.

The Royal Palm

This stately restaurant is designed within the remaining old stone walls of a sugar factory once in active operation on this property. The dining room is located between the lush gardens and the 66-foot, spring-fed pool. Tables are set with fine linens, china and crystal. For a final flourish, fresh flowers are on every table as well as large bouquets on the bar. There is a spectacular view of the Caribbean and sugar cane fields from every table; stepping outside, there's a stone archway that is a favourite photo spot. Chef Pamela Yahn offers an innovative menu that changes daily. Only the freshest of island ingredients are used. Some of her offerings include shrimp, lobster, local fish, veal, chicken, pork and beef, all prepared creatively.

Cafe des Arts

Eat and enjoy fine artwork at the same time in one of a new breed of eateries. Restaurateur Gillian Smith, who also owns Bananas Bistro (see separate listing) on the island, runs a charming place open from mornings through mid-afternoon, and, it's the only place in town to get a good cup of coffee. From pastries, fresh-baked croissants to salads and quiches for lunch, the cafe has a continental flair. Guests can eat in the gallery area, or outside in a brightly painted courtyard filled with tables and umbrellas.
