Djurgården

Djurgården sits in the heart of Stockholm, a tiny island that has blossomed into a verdant tourist spot over the years. The island has been held by the Royal Crown since the 15th Century. Djurgården abounds in cultural attractions and historic sights. Scattered in between are vast swathes of greenery - meadows, forests and parks - that offer a sense of solitude. From ABBA: The Museum, the Nordic Museum, the Vasa Museum, Skansen and the Thielska Gallery to family-friendly attractions like the amusement park Gröna Lund and the charms of the Djurgårdsstaden neighborhood, such a rich collection of sights in such close proximity is rarely found elsewhere. There are also performance venues like Cirkus and the Royal Dramatic Theatre, walks beneath wooded canopies, and yachts docked at the harbor. A little of history, culture and nature, Djurgården is Stockholm's crowning glory.

Skansen

Located in Djurgården, this open-air museum also has a zoological park that displays Scandinavian fauna. Arthur Hazelius laid the foundation of this museum-park in 1891 to showcase the historical transition of the Swedish people. Historic buildings that date back to the 18th century surround the park, and the hosts dressed in traditional costumes greet the visitors. The park is open all through the year, and tourists throng to the place to experience the 18th century lifestyle. Prices and hours depend on the time of year, so be sure to check the website for further details.

Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall, a gorgeous and historical municipal building, houses offices, ceremonial and banquet halls. The tower of the City Hall is located at the shores of Lake Mälaren and offers an incredible view of the city. It is open for access daily from May to September at a nominal admission price.

Fotografiska

Enjoy spell-binding art at Fotografiska, located in a historic Art Nouveau style building built in 1906. Known as one of the leading photography museums of our time, Fotografiska's large space is dedicated to hosting four large-scale exhibitions annually, besides also hosting 20 small scale exhibitions during the year. In the past, Fotografiska has featured prominent artists in the field, such as Helene Schmitz, Albert Wiking and Martin Borgen. The large space also consists of an award-winning restaurant, a gift shop and a book shop.

Moderna Museet

The Moderna Museum, located across the bridge from Skeppsholmen, is one of the most interesting museums in the city. The building itself is highly acclaimed for its clean aesthetic lines, open spaces and brilliant use of natural light. Many of the exhibitions create a powerful cocktail of provocative, shocking, confusing and fantastic elements, and it is possible that you may feel a bit dizzy in the spacious rooms, especially with works that force the audiences to re-evaluate space and dimensions. On the whole, the museum is a challenging but rewarding place to visit. It houses an excellent collection of both Swedish and international modern art, including many familiar pieces by Warhol, Duchamp, Matisse and Picasso. You can also spend several hours in the photography library, and the comprehensive gift shop. Please check the website for timings.

Swedish History Museum

The Swedish History Museum offers an engaging history of the Vikings and the ancient Swedish people. The museum is known for its excellent collection of medieval and prehistoric artifacts. Its reputation has been gilded by the opening of the Gold Room, which contains Sweden's largest collection of gold and silver treasures from the Viking era.
