"Towerhouse in the Town's Center"

The Castle of St. John is a tower house built around 1500 AD by one of the most powerful families of Wigtownshire in Scotland. The castle has been put to various uses over the years. Its original builders and owners used it as a residential space. During the 1680s, it was used by the government troops as their headquarters. The tower has also been used as a local court and later on as a prison in the 19th century. The Castle has a steep spiral staircase in it and is open for viewers at designated timings.
