This place is known by the citizens of Strasbourg for the fringe theatre and cabarets that are performed here, but there is also a fun and authentic winstub run by Roger Siffer, a famous local performer. This restaurant serves choucroute au chou rouge au jambonneau (sauerkraut made with red cabbage and knuckle of ham) and the more traditional version with excellent charcuterie (cold meats). Wash it all down with a Fischer beer - the best in Alsace. Frequent live musical entertainment and cabaret-dinner-show reservations available.
A dose of tapas, a lot of houses and Latin music, mix it together and you've got the Abattoir! With a solid reputation, this bar has been established for some years as the spearhead of Strasbourg house music parties. Boundaries cease to exist here, both in terms of the food, which includes tapas dishes from all over the world, and DJs, who are as likely to be from Germany or Switzerland as Strasbourg. And to top it all, the sofas are comfortable! Beer costs are cheap and soft drinks and tapas are available too.
The doorman may not be very chatty, but the Mexican atmosphere within is warm and enticing. As for the tapas, you'll find plenty of choices, but little that's original. There are as many vegetarian tapas as meat and fish, and all at very reasonable prices. Wash it all down with tequila or Mexican beer. Later in the evening Latin-American music inspires diners to dance the salsa or bossa-nova. They have an extensive bar menu to serve, one can choose from a soft drink, beer, or any spirits and tapas. A huge variety of white and red wine is available.
The specialty here is their home-brewed beer, which is made in the leather barrels located in the bar. Both light and brown ales are excellent and there are also seasonal and creative brews. The music is blues, with live concerts a few times a week. If you fancy a snack, you can treat yourself to the bruschetta (pizza on Italian bread) cooked in the Lanterne kitchen. They have an extensive bar menu to choose within from.
This restaurant is located in one of the prettiest and most photographed parts of the city (apart from the cathedral) in a half-timbered three-story building. Ask for a table by the big bay windows for a superb view of the Petite France quarter and the locks along the Ill river. The numerous Alsatian dishes served here are excellent value for money and you may be lucky enough to hear a singer and pianist perform traditional French songs. Enjoy the main course with a starter and dessert at lunchtime. A set menu with starter, main course, and dessert is also available.
Just because klein means small there is no reason not to walk down this alley and in fact, behind smoked glass windows, is an excellent restaurant that serves high-quality food. On the menu there is: sliced poultry in mild spices émincé de volailles aux épices douces, beef in preserved onions with noodles araignée de boeuf aux petits oignons confits accompagnee de spätzle or duck with sauerkraut un croustillant de canard à la choucroute et au miel de sapin and everything is served with a smile. Open for lunch and dinner from Mondays through Fridays.
What can one say about Emile Jung and his famous Crocodile that has not already been said? Obviously, when you have been going for ten years with three stars, it earns you a certain reputation. Here the service team and sommelier are as irreproachable as the food, and Madame Jung keeps a close eye on everything. You may have difficulty choosing from the excellent range of dishes: pig's trotter and ear truffled with new cabbage and Darphin potatoes, tuna croustille, aubergine caviar conserves, and desserts like mango-and-pear-glazed nougat and muscatel-and-cream-of-nut sorbet are among the favorites.
This is a cross between a Parisian brasserie, a winstub and a traditional French bistro. Whatever you care to call it, this place has a wonderful selection of meats especially the cassolette de tête de veau sauce ravigote, foie gras d'oie en terrine, home-made sauerkraut choucroute avec jambonneau, quenelles de foie, langue de buf. The menu also includes fish dishes such as salmon tartar with fresh herbs on a bed of mixed salad tartare de saumon aux herbes fraîches sur salade composé, sea bream in olive sauce suprême de dorade à la tapenade or duo de saint-jacques et de gambas à la fleur de thym and some delicious fruit tarts.
Behind this magnificent façade the interior is decorated in wood and the tables are close enough to be able to share conversations with your neighbours, so a friendly atmosphere is guaranteed. Marie, the owner, is extremely attentive and helpful and the menu offers regional dishes such as quenelles de foie à la crème, (beef, pork, lamb, onions and potatoes stewed in white wine) baeckeoffe and kougelhopf glacé (a home-made ice cream cake) for dessert.
This restaurant is an authentic old-fashioned winstub: an old heating stove, checked tablecloths, carved chairs, wide benches and photos that have turned yellow with age as well as house white wine served by the glass instead of beer. As for food, the famous ham pie is delicious, but the knuckle of ham in sauerkraut and shoulder of pork with a potato salad is also good. Dining at Le Saint-Sépulcre will not hurt your pocket. It guarantees a delicious mean that will include starter, main course, and dessert at a moderate price.
'Le Glacier Franchi' is situated five minutes, on foot, from the 'Homme de Fer' and the Place Kléber. You might be forgiven for thinking that its location is why this ice-cream shop is so successful, however, it does have other attractions. It was the originality and quality of their ice creams and sorbets that built their reputation. Whether you want ice cream in the summer, or a cup tea or a cappuccino in the winter, this is definitely a good place to go.
In the shade of the cathedral, nestling at the end of these picturesque lanes where you will also find Chez Yvonne, Le Katzeroller and le Saint-Sépulcre, there is another small one just as charming and welcoming as the others in pure winstub style with its full and varied menu based on the regional dishes that you will taste next to its fireplace: a steak, kidneys, frogs legs, a shoulder of wild boar in a stew and for dessert, treat yourself to a kougelhopf glacéd in Gewurztraminer.
