Strombolicchio

Strombolicchio is a vertical column of rock found among the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily. The rock has volcanic origins and is basaltic in nature. The rock formation has a lighthouse at the top which can be reached by climbing a concrete stairway of 200 steps. The island, which is a popular tourist attraction in Stromboli has a wide variety of flora and fauna and has therefore been named a nature reserve. The island is also home to a rare flower and an endemic species of lizard which has almost reached extinction.

Stromboli

Stromboli Island is part of the Aeolian Islands and is characterized by a still active volcano with an eruption about every hour. Its economy is based primarily on agriculture and tourism.

Mount Stromboli

Located on the small island of Stromboli just off the coast of Italy, is Mount Stromboli. It is one of three volcanoes in Italy that are still active. Several volcanic explosions have taken place over the years and minor eruptions are very frequent here, making this a beautiful sight to see. This volcano can be seen from far off and has over time gained the nick-name of The Lighthouse of the Mediterranean, due to its incandescent lava bursts.

Panarea

The Aeolian Islands form an archipelago of volcanic entities floating in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Sicily in Italy. Panarea is the second smallest of these islands. As a volcanic island, it has an inactive volcano and several hot springs. The site of a shipwreck near the island is makes for a popular scuba diving spot. Settlers on the island go back all the way to the Mycenaean era. The Romans also settled on the island as evidenced by archaeological finds. Only about 280 people stay on the island through the year although it does see quite a number of tourists. As a UNESCO recognized heritage along with the rest of the Aeolian Islands, the island is strictly preserved.
