"Luxurious Tudor Manor House"
This is not just a castle but a luxurious home built between the 1520s and 1580s when the Welsh gentry were becoming very prosperous under Tudor rule. It sits on Oxwich Point above the village with a military style gateway that was almost certainly only for show. It has two distinct sections. The older part, created by Sir Rice Mansel, was lived in for many centuries and has remained more or less intact. Sir Mansel's son added a vast complex with three six-storey towers, one of which still remains along with a block almost as high containing a great hall and an Elizabethan long gallery. It provides a fascinating insight into the leisured life during one of Britain's peaceful periods.
