Formerly known as Hayden's Ferry after one Charles Hayden, this bustling college town was named in homage to the man who developed the land around the Salt River. In 1879, the name was changed to Tempe after the Vale of Tempe in Greece and subsequently growth took off with the advent of the railway system which ran right through town. Today, this Phoenix suburb is primarily known as Arizona State University territory and people who live here are easily entertained with all the services this institution provides. From sports and arts to nightlife and college revelry, Tempe has a little to offer everyone.
