Archaeological Site of Troy

"The Stuff of Legends"

A city lost in time, the ruins of Troy paint the picture of a once prosperous civilization at the cusp of cultures. The Trojan War was considered by many to be fictional until excavations at this site in northwestern Anatolia revealed the astonishing remains of what could only be the ancient city of Troy. Charles Maclaren was the first to suggest in 1822 that this was potentially the Homeric Troy. In 1860, Frank Calvert conducted the first investigations at the site now commonly known as Troy. A subsequent scientific study was carried out by Heinrich Schliemann from 1870 to 1890 at the behest of Calver. With its strategic position at the southwestern entrance to the Dardanelles Strait, Troy was once a flourishing center of trade and commerce. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins chronicle the first encounter between the Anatolians and the people of the Mediterranean.
