"Local Culture & History"
The Castel Tirolo can be reached by car from Merano. It is home to the provincial museum of history and culture. It has medieval rooms which were once lived in by the Tyrol Counts who gave their name to the surrounding area. The most imposing, surrounding walls still exist and the most probable precursor of the imperial castles of the Hohenstaufen make it one of the most interesting tourist attractions in the area. There is also a Roman portal, proto-Gothic frescoes and the most ancient glass painting in the Tyrol.
