All Japan Naginata Federation
"Non-violent Martial Art"
Naginata may be little known to the West but in Japan, particularly among women, Naginata has become a fairly popular sport. It is one of the least violent of all martial arts. Monks who wanted to detain but not injure their enemies developed naginata. They were able to bring down or at least fend off the opponent using long poles of bamboo. You can see naginata, along with any other martial art, at the training grounds of Nippon Budokan.
