Bashamichi Taproom

A must for beer lovers, Bashamichi Taproom is one of several outlets for Baird Beer, a small brewery dedicated to making flavorsome beers using traditional malted barley, whole flower hops and soft Numazu water. The three-story Taproom has a long bar on the ground floor, a large room with bar and table seating on the second floor and a rooftop beer garden. The range of beers on tap include brown ale, pale ale, IPAs, a lager, a stout, and amber ale, as well as seasonal choices and a guest ale. The food menu offers authentic American style BBQ with beef, pork and chicken. There is also pizza, salad, macaroni cheese and Texas chili. A big-screen TV and regular music events help to create an inviting atmosphere. -AH

Bar Piano

The wooden ornate door welcomes you at Bar Piano. The decor is chic with grand crystal chandeliers and the faux fireplace, creating a vibrant ambiance along with the velvet red walls. Golden frames and interesting decorations comprising taxidermed animals and regal lamps adorn the walls. You will surely be charmed by the bold interiors. Come here for a night full of fun. The quality liquor available will compel you to visit this place again.

Frijoles

There are several large, Mexican restos in Tokyo, but it takes this small, non-descriptive place to push the envelope. Hidden down a backstreet, Frijoles is really worth looking for. Unusually stark inside and out, the friendly staff guide you through a variety of choices for the neophyte or seasoned professional. Burritos, soft tacos and a variety of salads and sides at Frijoles fill the tummy without breaking the bank. Fresh ingredients and good, common sense are in abundance. Everyone eats well at Frijoles, so take the time to search out and enjoy cool Mexican food in a cool atmosphere with friendly staff. Ole! -Stephen Lebovits

Nefertiti

Named after the royal consort of Pharaoh Akhenaten, the Nefertiti restaurant in Nakameguro gives Tokyoites yet another exotic culinary experience. Stepping back in time, you sit at curtained booths and are encouraged to partake of their hookah pipes, literally inhaling the Middle Eastern ambiance. With patience being a virtue in ancient cultures, don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit for your food - but like the pyramids, all good things are worth the wait. From hummus and shish kebab, to beef or lamb shawarma, Nefertiti does not disappoint. With cheaper lunchtime specials on offer, a mid-day bite would be a good choice. The downstairs, open-air cafe is open from 11am to 2am. -Stephen Lebovits

Lupin

Lupin's fame - given that it's a tiny windowless basement bar - is mainly due to the astounding amount of literary heavyweights have passed through. Kan Kikuchi, Osamu Dazai, Shusaku Endo - they've all raised glasses here, along with a litany of artists, photographers and actors. Lupin has been around since 1928, and survived the Showa period and it is still incredibly popular today - go for a beer and check out the bar's collection of photographs of many of Japan's most venerable writers.

Waterline Floating Lounge

Permanently moored to the flagship T.Y. Harbor Brewery restaurant, the Waterline lounge keeps you afloat while you whet your whistle and chill directly on the water. Used for both public and private affairs, and offering a Sunday and holiday brunch, if Tokyo's weather cooperates, this is a great spot to relax, hidden away from the hustle and bustle. Open to the public most nights and featuring live Jazz several times per month, hanging at the Waterline gives everyone a taste of the affluent life just a hop, skip and jump away from the nearest metro station. So come enjoy your walk on the water. -Stephen Lebovits
