Beach Hebrew Institute

by zeevveez

"Neighborhood Synagogue"

The Beach Hebrew Institute (Beit Knesset Beit Ya'akov in Hebrew) is a synagogue in Toronto, Ontario. The Orthodox Jewish congregation was established in 1919 by a small community of English speaking Jews, but fell in a state of disrepair after World War II following which it was renovated. This Vernacular architecture style building thrived in a neighborhood that displayed some anti-Semitic tendencies during the World War II and thus avoided using the word 'synagogue' in its name. Today, the synagogue also houses a Hebrew School.
