Viale XX Settembre

"Tree-Lined Street"

Viale XX Settembre is the site of the city's ancient acqueduct and today is one of the most pleasant and popular places to walk in the city. It is very near the central and chaotic Via Battisti, but compared to this it is a haven of peace (it is pedestrianized except in special cases) and is popular with lots of people. Some of Trieste's best gelaterie are situated along this beautiful tree-lined street which links Via Carducci with the Il Giulia shopping center. The street also contains the city's main cinemas such as the Excelsior, the multi-screen Nazionale, the Super, the Mignon (the last of the adult cinemas), and the Ambasciatori, housed in one of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in the city center. The Rossetti theatre is located halfway up the street and is the most popular theatre in the city. There are lots of pizzerias, patisseries, an excellent restaurant ( Stanlio e Olio) and all sorts of shops. This street is a real institution (it is much more than just a street for the local people), and it was once the place where the local right-wing militants met.
