Zoológico Miguél Álvarez del Toro

Zoologico Miguel Alvarez del Toro or Zoomat, named after the famed Miguel Alvarez is a must visit for it shelters breeds of amazing rare animals. An endemic zoo, the place offers special night tours to the reptile sections that are interesting to visit. Sumidero Canyon

The walls of the Sumidero Canyon that soar to a whopping 762 meters (2500 feet) is an eye catching spectacle of nature. The canyon boasts of serene waterfalls, beaches, freshwater springs, rain-forests and caves hidden in the rugged terrain of its interiors. The easiest way to reach the canyon is a boat ride of about two to three hours on the Grijalva River. Mexico's most important electricity generating source, a hydroelectric dam, Chicoasen is located on this river. Within the canyon is an ecological park that offers tourists many activities such as hiking, biking on the mountain slopes, kayaking, abseiling and swimming. There is also a wildlife sanctuary that is home to a number of plant, animal and bird species of which some are in the endangered category.

Parque de la Marimba

Located on Central Avenue, Parque de la Marimba is every music and dance lover’s favorite place to be. Post sunset, you will find local musicians playing soulful melodies with marimbas, Chiapas’ traditional instrument. Cana Hueca

Overlooking Sabinal River, Caña Hueca is one of the most beautiful parks in Tuxtla Gutierrez. It was inaugurated in 1982 as a recreational and sports park. The park features a basketball court, football ground, gym, tennis court, race tracks and cafes. Surrounded by lush green trees, this park is a must visit for those who want to take a break from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Museo del Café de Chiapas

Established in 2009, Museo del Cafe de Chiapas opened its doors to conserve and promote the local coffee culture. This museum is housed in an old building that was built in 1913. Through various exhibits, the museum tells the story of how coffee originated in Mexico and other parts of the world. They offer guided tours, workshops and coffee-tasting so visitors can learn about the history and growth of the coffee industry.

Faustino Miranda Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden founded under the leadership of Dr. Faustino Miranda, is named after him. He dedicated many years of his life in researching and studying different plants in Chiapas. The garden is home to a variety of Chiapas trees, plants of medicinal value, plentiful flowering plants and plants of other variety too. There are books on botany that are available in the library located inside the garden.
