Formerly a fortified stronghold of the Holy Roman Empire, Burg Nanstein was believed to be built in 1162 by Emperor Fredrick I. The Nahe River that flows through the area eroded the stone away over millions of years, creating this steep rock face. Today the mountain is a conservation area.
