"Volcano Island"
Part of the Westman group of islands, the Heimaey Island once thrived as a charming islet in the North Atlantic Ocean. The majestic Eldfell volcano, which erupted in 1973 and led to the evacuation of the island's inhabitants while the volcano shot flames into the sky, forms a picturesque backdrop. Following the fiery blaze was a thick cloud of ash that settled over the town. When residual molten lava approached the town, it was doused with icy cold seawater. This act caused most of the lava to solidify, thus saving the town. Despite this eruption, the town managed to survive. After the eruption, life on the island has resumed its course. The scenic Icelandic isle is now home to a moderate number of inhabitants, and nearly eight million puffins that visit it each summer.
