Wirra Wirra Wines have a reputation for their fine reds made from the superb grapes produced in McLaren Vale vineyards. The three-quarter tonne Wirra Wirra bell, in the grounds of the historic ironstone cellars, is traditionally rung to signal the start and finish of each vintage. To signify that, the name "The Angelus" has been given to Wirra's premium red wine made from specially selected parcels of quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Picnic grounds set amongst the majestic gum trees on the property provide an ideal spot for a leisurely lunch.

This is a small boutique winery just outside the McLaren Flat township where the hills come down to meet the vales. This beautiful countryside is well worth visiting. Kangarilla Road Winery is one of the few Australian wineries to use the favorite grape of America, Zinfandel. The resultant wine is a spicy, light, red--perfect for summer drinking. Try some chilled-unlike the normal gutsy McLaren Vale reds, this tastes even better when it is cool.

Forty minutes from Adelaide, the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor Centre provides a lot more than accommodation and wine information. The region has 48 cellar doors which does not include the centre's own vineyard. A rose nursery, home-grown lavender, almonds and olives promote the region's other fruits. This small family-owned winery, Scarpantoni Wines, provides a taste of the Mediterranean in the Southern Vales. Tucked away in the tiny township of McLaren Flat, Scarpantoni is best known for its ever popular favorite School Block red wine blend. But be sure to try some of the other wines on offer-especially the medal winning Block 3 Shiraz. There is good coffee at the cellar door and occasional fine music concerts.
