Medieval Mikveh in Erfurt

The ritual bath is important for the Jewish community and is mainly used by women. It serves ritual cleansing after having touched objects deemed unclean in the religion. A woman immerses herself in a bath after her menses, after childbirth and once again to be ordained pure to share the bed with her husband. A mikveh is nourished by “living,” i.e., flowing water. The basin is still fed by the Gera. Evidence on this mikveh can be traced back to the mid-1200s. Believers had to pay for the service and land to the city of Erfurt. Medieval tax documents reveal the dense population in these parts. In the Jewish quarter, Jews and Christians lived cheek by jowl.
