The Zwischenahner Meer is located in the district of Ammerland and stands at a height of 16 feet (5 meters) covering a surface area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 square kilometers). One of the most striking structures in town, the Hoffnungskirche is a historic church dating back to the 19th Century. The church interiors are equally beautiful as its facade. The altar and pulpit were built in the 19th Century and the stalls were fit in 1848. The baptismal font was donated to the church in 1886. The first organ of the church was built in 1852 and was later renovated several times. In 1997, a colored organ was installed at the church.
Ev.-luth. St.-Nicolai-Kirche is a historic Lutheran house of worship in Wittmund. Occupying a prominent spot on Am Kirchplatz, it was probably built in the year 1775, while the consecration took place in the year 1776. A fine example of Baroque architectural style, it features a red-brick facade and arched windows, among other architectural highlights. The tapering gabled ceiling is also overlaid with red tiles. Its imposing tower is seen with a Baroque vault while the two magnificent chandeliers date back to the 17th Century. It serves as an active venue for a host of classical music concerts.
