"Chautauqua County History"
This 14-room, Federal-style mansion houses the collections of the Chautauqua County Historical Society. The home was built in 1818 by James McClurg, a wealthy man originally from Pittsburgh. McClurg decided to build a more elegant home for his family, rather than a log home like most other settlers lived in. After the last of his descendants died, the home was left to the village to be used as a public building. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Displays on three floors pertain to the development of Chautauqua County and feature art, antiques, dolls and more, including an exhibit on Chautauqua County’s connection to president Abraham Lincoln. - Christine A.
