Built in 1740, the Old First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington is definitely worth a visit. Used as a hospital during the American Revolution, this place was restored beautifully. The church has a brick-structure exterior and classically preserved roof which adds to the beauty of the place. It is also the headquarters of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America.
One of the most well-known historic churches in the city, Oxford Presbyterian Church was built in the year 1902. The one and a half story building comprises of Romanesque Revival style architecture with a gable roof. A three story pyramidal roof tower is also part of the church complex. Besides being a popular religious point, the church also served as a community centre and a local history museum, known as Oak Grove. Listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the Oxford Presbyterian Church must definitely be visited during your stay in the city.
Hancock House built in 1728 was the residence of Judge William and Sarah Hanock. The brick house is known for the infamous Hanock Bridge massacre, when militants along with the house owners were killed by the military. A tour here presents the inner life of its settlers and the blood stains from the massacre are still seen on the floor of the house.
Located on Darby Road, this school with only one room was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and served as a public school for quite some time. It was built in 1797 and later was reconstructed by the Historical Society of Haverford Township and is now open for public visit by prior appointment.
Square Tavern is a two and a half storied building that is considered to be one of the few important and extinct buildings in Newtown Square. This beautiful house belonged to the then famous artist called Benjamin West and the other settlers who's history can be found at this tavern. This lovely brick styled house conducted various group, private tours and special events that can be found on their website. If you love history and architecture, make your way to this lovely house that was built way back in the 17th century.
