Located on the Central Campus of Macomb County Community College, this is a first-rate community arts center, the most active in the United States. It includes an art gallery and showcases a wide range of performances, from local musicians to touring musicals to family shows to dance and comedy acts. If you find yourself in the north-eastern reaches of the Detroit area, this might be your best bet for entertainment. Each season the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts presents an eclectic line-up of nearly 100 events, with a wide range of performers from the likes of Yo-Yo Ma to Tim Conway.
One of the area's most prestigious avant-garde art museums, Cranbrook Art Museum features acclaimed contemporary painters, sculptors, promising new artists who display challenging and cutting-edge exhibitions. The museum's permanent collection highlights the accomplishments of decades of Cranbrook graduates from many different mediums. This is a popular gathering spot for local artists and art critics and is the center of a vibrant artistic community.
Once the former residence and masterpiece of the Finnish architect, Eliel Saarinen and his wife Loja, this stunning home is now open to the public for tours. Completed in the fall of 1930, the Saarinen House cost over USD140,000 to build, compared to the average USD6,000 of the time in Detroit. This brick and stone home features gorgeous textiles done by Loja herself, original artwork by their daughter and beautiful landscaping. Visitors can go on guided tours from May through October.
Well-known for its observatory, planetarium and laser light shows, the well-respected Cranbrook Institute of Science imparts natural history and science education in creative ways that blend old and new approaches. Outdoor activities, including eclipse viewing and maple tree tapping, are frequent. The institute features magnificent exhibits exploring the diversity of dinosaurs and its origin. There are various programs, lectures and camps held here as well.
