Kamakura-gu Shrine

"Meiji Emperor Visit"

This shrine complex is quite young by Japanese standards and was finished in time for a visit by Emperor Meiji in 1873. The treasure house holds memorabilia of this important event. It was the young emperor who founded the shrine here, in honor of Emperor Go-Daigo's third son, Morinaga. The site is now widely known for its cherry blossoms. A visit in late April or early May will ensure that you experience the cherry blossoms at their peak. Admission: Free
