Gumyo-ji Temple


"Yokohama's Oldest"

Noteworthy as it is the oldest temple in Yokohama, this Shingon sect temple is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, the Eleven-Headed Kannon. The 1.8-meter tall carving dates to the ninth century and has been named an important cultural property. The priest called Gyoki founded the temple in 737, under the orders of Emperor Shomu.
