"Parting Hair in Yamashita Park"

This large stone head with its centered hair part is a monument to the start of Western style hairdressing in Japan. The early barbers of Yokohama practiced shaving the heads of sailors on visiting ships, and adopted Western hairdressing techniques when they saw how Western barbers used scissors instead of a razor. Around 1870 these barbers were able to open their own shop in the Foreign Settlement - the first barber's shop in Japan. Profits increased in 1872 when the Meiji Government issued a haircut ordinance and Japanese men had their long hair shorn in a short style known as zangiri. The new hairstyles were considered the essence of "civilization and enlightenment." -AH
