"Final Foreign Trading House"
Across the road from Yamashita Park and somewhat dwarfed by the surrounding tower blocks is a building formerly known as English House Number 7. It was constructed around 1922 and used by Butterfield, Swire and Company. It is the only foreign trading house remaining from before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The building now serves as the Toda Peace Memorial Hall, a reminder of Josei Toda's "declaration for the abolition of atomic and hydrogen bombs" in 1957. Here, the original documents from his speech are preserved, and it is now used as a museum and place for peace and antiwar exhibitions. Opening times vary, but the building can be viewed from the outside easily. -AH
