"Word War II Supply Ships"

The monument on Shinko Pier is there to commemorate the first ship that brought relief supplies from an American organization called LARA (Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia) in 1946 after the end of World War II. By the end of the war, Japan was blockaded and unable to import food supplies from the usual sources. Food had become so scarce that the government called on the people to collect acorns to be converted into foodstuffs. If the war had continued into 1946, it was estimated that millions of Japanese people would have died of starvation, so the supply ships provided a much-needed lifeline. They continued to arrive until 1952. -AH
