In a Grade II listed building, the Snickleway Inn has been documented as an inn since at least 1769, with parts of the building going back to the late 15th Century. Its real claim to fame, however, is that it’s supposedly the most haunted pub in York. It is the home to several different ghosts and phenomena, including the ghost of a young girl, an angry old man in the clear, and the unaccountable smell of lavender on the top floor. That aside, the Snickleway Inn is a friendly place with good beer and good, if basic, food; try the sandwiches, which are huge.

The Golden Fleece is one of the oldest in the city. Formerly a 16th-century coaching inn, the beer garden was originally used to stable horses. Reputedly haunted by five different ghosts, this is a pub with an extensive history going right back to 1503, and because it is built on a wooden frame with no foundations, the uneven floors and walls make it look a little like an Escher drawing.
Situated within an old-school rural brick-house, Lamb & Lion Pub is the perfect spot for a classic English meal and a round of drinks. This typical English pub is one of the best places in town for a good old-fashioned jug of beer, with a bit of friendly banter at the side. Walk in for swig of one of the many local beers available on tap, or take your pick from its selection of imported spirits. The food menu features a scrumptious selection of traditional British pub food, including the poplar favorites like fish & chips, Shepard's pie and Slow Braised Pig’s Cheek.
The front room of the Evil Eye has literally shelf after shelf of bottles of spirits, all set to make the many cocktails that are their specialty. Behind that is the main bar area, including a small internet café, and beyond the door is a small patio. Go upstairs and discover a first-floor room with two beds covered in cushions for real lazing and drinking, then up on the top floor is yet more seating and computers. The eclectic decor leans to the bohemian end of East Asian, in keeping with the Thai food served during the week. Sundays see more traditional roasts and Yorkshire puddings after noon, in very generous portions.
