"17th Century Fortifications"

Situated next to the House of Wonders, this fort has a commanding view out over the sea. It was built between 1698 and 1701 by the Omani Arabs who had wrested control from the Portuguese in 1699. In the 19th Century the fort was used as a prison and in the 1900's became a depot for the railway line built to connect Zanzibar town with other parts of the island. Today the fort is open to visitors and one part has been turned into an open air theater where contemporary and traditional music and drama is performed. Displays of traditional dancing can be seen during high season.
